Planting Is Not the Final Layer
Planting is often treated as the last layer of a garden, but in a refined landscape it should influence the design from the beginning.

Planting Design
Layered, considered planting schemes that bring softness, rhythm and long-term maturity to the garden.
Planting expertise
A successful planting scheme needs more than a list of plants. It requires horticultural knowledge, spatial awareness and an understanding of how a garden will develop season after season.
Layered borders designed with rhythm, proportion and seasonal interest, creating planting that feels generous, balanced and connected to the wider garden.
Carefully selected trees, shrubs and feature plants used to frame views, create privacy, add height and give the garden an immediate sense of maturity.
Planting palettes designed to shift through the year, balancing spring emergence, summer abundance, autumn colour and winter structure.
Softer, more relaxed planting styles that can bring movement, biodiversity and a naturalistic quality to larger gardens and open spaces.
Planting choices that support pollinators, improve resilience and work with the conditions of the site rather than against them.
The unseen preparation that helps planting establish well, from soil improvement and drainage considerations to careful sourcing and setting out.
Designed to evolve
Planting is what allows a garden to settle into its setting. It softens architecture, frames views, brings movement through the seasons and gives the finished landscape a sense of life.
At Refined Landscapes, planting design is considered from the earliest stages of a project. We look at structure, scale, soil, light, aspect, colour, texture and long-term care to create planting schemes that feel natural to the property and continue to mature beautifully over time. Through strategic use of mature planting and specimen trees we create a garden that feels established and timeless from the first day.
The living layer
From plant selection and setting out to installation and establishment, planting is where structure, softness and seasonality come together.
Our planting process
Planting is planned with the finished garden and its future care in mind. Our process considers the site conditions, the style of the design and the way each plant will establish, mature and contribute to the garden over time.
We assess light, shade, soil, exposure, views, privacy, existing planting and the wider character of the property.
We discuss the desired atmosphere, colour palette, level of formality, seasonal interest, privacy needs and maintenance expectations.
A planting plan is developed to show structure, rhythm, key species, border composition and how the planting will work across the garden.
Plants are sourced with attention to quality, scale, seasonality and suitability for the conditions of the site.
Borders are prepared, soil conditions are improved where required and plants are set out carefully before installation.
Trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, bulbs and lawns are installed with care to support healthy establishment.
New planting needs the right care in its early stages. We provide guidance or ongoing garden aftercare to help the scheme mature as intended.
From palette to planting
A planting scheme is shaped through structure, texture, colour, height and rhythm. Plans, palettes and plant selections help define how the garden will feel throughout the year, before a single plant is placed in the ground.
Through the seasons
The strongest planting schemes are not designed for a single photograph. They are composed to offer structure, texture and interest across the year, from fresh spring growth to winter silhouettes.

Designed to mature
A new planting scheme continues to develop long after installation. With the right care, pruning, feeding, watering and seasonal attention, planting becomes fuller, more settled and more expressive year after year. For clients who want continuity, our garden aftercare service helps protect the design intent and supports the planting as it matures.
A selection of our Google reviews
Jacob and the whole team at Refined Landscapes have been incredible from the very start. They listened to what we wanted and came up with a design that has transformed our new build garden into an amazing place we are so proud of and enjoy spending time in. The renders gave us an accurate idea of how the finished garden would look. Sarah’s planting plan was spot on and every week we delight in the changing views. The team who carried out the work were Isaac, Adam and Josh, with occasional input from others and every person at Refined has been a pleasure to deal with. The guys were careful and conscientious with meticulous attention to detail. We would not hesitate to recommend Refined Landscapes.
Refined were nothing short of superb in transforming our gardens. They took our aging and rapidly deteriorating garden and turned it into something we're proud of – beautiful, tranquil and green. Joe, Russell and the team were friendly and considerate throughout the works. We would use them again in a heartbeat and recommend them to anyone.
A complete and fabulous vision brought to life with a great team , amazing work ethic and fun to be around Thank you . Penny

Planting design is the planning and composition of trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, bulbs and lawns within a garden. It considers structure, colour, texture, seasonality, soil, light, aspect and long-term care.
Soft landscaping usually refers to the living elements of a garden, including plants, lawns, trees and soil preparation. Planting design is more specialist. It focuses on how those living elements are composed, selected and managed to create a beautiful, lasting garden.
