Our Process
A Considered Process from First Conversation to Finished Garden
A clear design and build journey, shaped to give every transformational garden project structure, control and confidence.
Clarity from the outset
Designed to make complex garden projects feel considered and controlled
A refined garden is not created in a single decision. It develops through careful briefing, site understanding, concept design, cost planning, technical detail, construction and aftercare.
Our process gives each project a clear route from first conversation to finished garden. It helps clients understand what happens when, where key decisions are made and how the design is protected as it moves from idea to build.
A clearer way to understand the garden
Our 3D visualisations help clients see the garden as a complete landscape before construction begins. Layout, levels, materials, lighting, planting and key features can all be understood together.
See the process unfold
From first ideas to finished landscape
The process behind a Refined garden brings together design thinking, technical planning, construction skill and planting detail.
From brief to handover
Every project is different, but the strongest gardens follow a considered path.
First Conversation
We begin with a conversation about your property, how you want to use the garden, the level of transformation you are considering and the type of support you need. This is where we start to understand whether the project is best suited to garden design, garden construction, planting design, outdoor living features or a complete design and build approach.
Design Consultation & Site Survey
A design consultation and site survey allow us to assess the character of the property, levels, access, orientation, views, boundaries, drainage, existing planting and any practical constraints. This early site understanding helps shape a realistic brief and reduces the risk of costly decisions being made too late.
Brief, Scope & Cost Planning
Before the design develops in detail, we clarify the brief, likely scope and investment level. This helps make sure the direction of the project is aligned with the budget, priorities and level of finish expected. Cost planning is part of a responsible process. It allows the garden to be ambitious, but still grounded in what is practical and achievable.
Concept Design
The concept design stage sets the direction for the garden. It explores layout, spatial planning, key views, terraces, lawns, planting areas, outdoor living features, movement through the space and the relationship between the garden and the home. At this stage, clients begin to see how the garden could look, feel and function.
Design Development
Once the concept is agreed, we develop the design in greater detail: levels, planting direction, lighting, irrigation, materials, furniture zones and key details. Where appropriate we include 3D visuals, planting layouts and construction design detail to help the client fully understand the scheme before construction begins.
Construction & Build
Our experienced construction team brings the design to life. We manage the full build process, from groundworks, hard landscaping and structures to water features, irrigation, lighting and planting, with regular communication and site visits throughout. We take responsibility for the quality and coordination of every element.
Planting & Aftercare
The final stage brings the garden to life through planting. We source and install all planting to the design specification, and provide guidance on ongoing care. For clients who would like continued support, we offer aftercare programmes to ensure the garden establishes well and continues to evolve with confidence in the seasons ahead.
What you can expect
Clear outputs at every stage
The right information helps clients make confident decisions. Depending on the scope of the project, the process may include plans, visuals, specifications, material palettes, planting plans and construction information.
-
Design brief
The agreed direction, priorities and practical requirements that guide the project.
-
Concept plan
The first clear view of the garden layout, structure, circulation and main spaces.
-
3D visuals
Photorealistic or illustrative visuals to help clients understand how the garden will feel.
-
Material palette
Stone, porcelain, timber, metalwork, finishes and details selected to suit the property and design.
-
Planting plans
Planting structure, key species, seasonal interest and horticultural direction.
-
Construction drawings
Technical details, levels, specifications and build information that support accurate delivery on site.
Technical precision
Confidence before construction
Steps, edges and junctions are resolved in detail before work begins, giving clients confidence that the agreed design can be delivered without compromise.
Communication and control
A clear point of contact throughout
A successful garden project depends on good communication. We understand our clients need to know what is happening, what decisions are required and how the project is progressing. Throughout the process, we keep communication clear and considered, with the right people involved at the right stage. This helps the design, build and planting teams stay aligned and gives clients confidence from start to finish.
Planting intent
Every plant with purpose
Species, quantities and positions are set out deliberately, balancing use, maintenance, seasonal character and mature form so the planting supports the design from day one and over time.
Decisions with confidence
Clear guidance at the moments that matter
Transformational garden projects involve important decisions. Materials, budgets, timings, planting, features and build details all need to be considered carefully. Our role is to guide those decisions with clarity. We explain the implications of each stage, identify where choices need to be made and help ensure the final garden reflects the agreed vision, investment and practical requirements.

Garden design process FAQs
Helpful answers about how a Refined garden moves from first conversation to finished landscape.
Still have a question?
Speak to the team directly. We are happy to talk through your project before you commit to anything.
How does the garden design process begin?
The process usually begins with an initial conversation about your property, the way you want to use the garden, the level of transformation you are considering and the support you need. From there, we can advise whether the next step is a design consultation, site survey or wider design and build discussion.
What happens during a site survey?
A site survey helps us understand the practical and design conditions of the garden. This can include levels, access, orientation, drainage, boundaries, existing planting, views, soil conditions and the relationship between the garden and the home.
What is included in concept design?
Concept design usually explores the overall layout and direction of the garden, including spatial planning, terraces, lawns, planting areas, routes, views, outdoor living features and the relationship between key spaces.
When are costs discussed?
Cost planning should happen early enough to make sure the design direction is realistic. We discuss investment level, scope and likely build considerations before the design becomes too detailed, then continue to refine costs as the project develops.
Do you create construction drawings?
Yes, where required. Construction drawings and technical information help translate the design into a buildable scheme, supporting accurate delivery of levels, materials, drainage, paving, walling, lighting coordination, planting and other details.
Can you manage the build as well as the design?
Yes. We can take a garden from design consultation and concept design through to garden construction, planting, handover and aftercare. This continuity helps protect the design intent throughout the project.
What happens at handover?
At handover, we walk through the finished garden, explain key details and provide guidance on how the space should be cared for as it begins to mature.
Do you provide aftercare after the garden is finished?
Yes. For clients who want ongoing support, our garden aftercare service helps protect the design intent, support new planting and keep the garden developing beautifully over time.
