Garden Construction & Landscape Build

Garden Construction for Refined Outdoor Spaces

Technical garden builds delivered with precision, project control and a finish worthy of the design.

Built with intent

Where design becomes a lasting garden

A beautifully designed garden relies on more than what can be seen. Levels, drainage, foundations, materials, sequencing and construction detailing all shape how well the finished space performs over time.

We deliver garden construction with the same care and clarity as the design process itself, bringing together structural knowledge, craftsmanship and finish quality across every stage of the build.

Built to last

Precision where it matters most

The details beneath the surface are often what determine whether a garden continues to look and perform as intended. This film shows how Refined approaches levels, drainage, foundations, materials and sequencing so the finished landscape has strength, balance and longevity.

Precision where it matters most

Construction expertise

The technical detail behind exceptional gardens

From groundwork and drainage to terraces, steps, retaining walls and final finishes, every element of the build is planned to support the design, the setting and the long-term performance of the garden.

  • Groundworks & preparation

Careful site clearance, excavation, access planning and level preparation create the foundation for a garden that can be built accurately and perform over time.

  • Drainage & infrastructure

Drainage, sub-bases, foundations, service routes and irrigation preparation are considered early, protecting the garden beneath the surface as well as above it.

  • Terraces, paving & steps

Natural stone, porcelain, clay pavers, setts, thresholds and steps are installed with precision so every level change feels resolved and intentional.

  • Retaining walls & structures

Retaining walls, raised beds, screens, pergolas and built elements are constructed to feel integrated with the wider landscape, not added as afterthoughts.

  • Lighting, water & outdoor features

Lighting, water features, outdoor kitchens, fire features and lifestyle elements are coordinated as part of the wider construction programme.

  • Planting preparation & finishing

Soil preparation, edging, lawns, borders, specimen planting and final finishing details bring structure and softness together at completion.

Our build process

A controlled route from plan to completion

A transformative garden build needs clear communication, careful sequencing and proper project control. Our process is designed to give clients confidence from pre-construction through to handover.

  1. Build review

We review the design, site conditions, access, levels, drainage, materials and construction requirements before work begins.

  2. Technical planning

Construction details, specifications, programme requirements and specialist elements are checked and refined before delivery.

  3. Cost planning & scheduling

Scope, sequencing, lead times, team requirements and practical delivery routes are confirmed before the build starts.

  4. Site preparation

Groundworks, clearance, excavation, protection, access and infrastructure are managed carefully from the outset.

  5. Construction delivery

Terraces, paving, walls, steps, structures, drainage, lighting preparation and key built elements are delivered by experienced teams.

  6. Planting & finishing

Soil preparation, planting, lawns, borders, detailing and final finishes bring the completed garden together.

  7. Handover & aftercare

The completed garden is walked through with the client, with garden aftercare guidance or ongoing garden care where required.

Isaac, Jacob, Joe and the entire Refined Landscape team were fantastic from beginning to end. They were incredibly trustworthy and respectful throughout the build, keeping me informed about progress and ensuring a tidy and clean site. The finished garden exceeded my expectations and reflected the same level of investment as I, the client, in achieving the highest quality finish. Their success at the BALI National Landscape Award is a testament to their skills and hard work. I wholeheartedly recommend them for anyone seeking a high-quality garden landscape design and finish.

We are delighted with the work carried out by Jake and his Team at Refined Landscapes and would highly recommend them. From start to finish, they provided a professional, reliable, and friendly service. What really stood out was their ability to offer practical solutions whenever challenges arose. We were fully consulted throughout the project on every design and logistical decision, and they took the time to provide samples of materials so we could make informed choices. This made the whole process straightforward and enjoyable. A special mention goes to Ken, whose meticulous paving skills are outstanding. His attention to detail and craftsmanship have resulted in a beautiful finish that has exceeded our expectations. The entire Refined team was polite, hardworking, and incredibly considerate of both us and our neighbouring properties. They kept the site exceptionally tidy at the end of each day, which was greatly appreciated. We are absolutely thrilled with the finished result and would thoroughly recommend Refined to anyone looking for high-quality landscaping work.

Garden construction FAQs

Useful answers before starting a professionally managed garden build.

Still have a question?

Speak to the team directly. We are happy to talk through your project before you commit to anything.

What is garden construction?

Garden construction is the practical build stage of a designed garden. It can include groundworks, drainage, terraces, paving, steps, retaining walls, garden structures, lighting preparation, water features, planting preparation and final finishing.

Do you only build gardens you have designed?

No. We can deliver our own garden designs or work from plans created by another garden designer, landscape designer or architect. Where we are brought in as the construction partner, we review the drawings, specifications and site conditions before confirming the best route to build.

What is the difference between garden construction and hard landscaping?

Hard landscaping usually refers to built elements such as paving, walls, steps, terraces and structures. Garden construction is broader. It includes the planning, infrastructure, sequencing, technical detailing and finishing required to deliver a complete garden build.

Do you manage the whole garden build?

Yes. We can manage the full garden construction process, including site preparation, sequencing, construction teams, materials, planting coordination and handover.

Can you include outdoor kitchens, lighting or water features?

Yes. These elements can be coordinated as part of the garden construction programme. We consider how each feature sits within the wider layout, services, materials, drainage and long-term use of the garden.

Where do you work?

We primarily deliver garden construction projects across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and North London, with selected projects considered further afield where the scope is the right fit.
