Country Estate Garden The Manor Promenade
Project Story
This country estate garden is organised through scale, structure and formality. A long route, raised planters, lawn panels and evergreen planting bring clarity to The Manor Promenade, while the outdoor kitchen, play and sport areas support modern family life within a composed architectural framework.

The challenge, our solution and our approach
The Challenge
This large, open garden needed a strong formal structure to give it presence and purpose. The brief called for a design-led setting for entertaining alongside practical family features including sport and play, all while keeping the overall feel cohesive, considered and in keeping with the architecture of the house.
Our Solution
We created a formal framework to organise the scale of the garden, using strong geometry and clean lines to establish a clear hierarchy of spaces. A long, linear walkway guides movement through the garden, with raised planters and structured evergreen planting adding rhythm and definition along the route. A wide central lawn provides a calm open core, while the main terrace and outdoor kitchen form a refined social hub close to the house. Further down, the basketball court and trampoline are integrated as a dedicated activity zone, subtly screened with contemporary panels and planting so the garden remains composed even when it is in full use.

Our Approach
Scale and formality define this 8,859 sq ft country estate garden in Harpenden. The Georgian manor house demands a landscape that matches its proportions and architectural confidence, and the design responds with classical symmetry, generous lawn panels, and structured planting that frames rather than obscures the building.
Mature specimen trees are retained as the garden’s most valuable asset, with a comprehensive arboricultural programme ensuring their long-term health. New planting is layered beneath and around them, using shade-tolerant species and structural evergreens to build depth and year-round interest. The hard landscape employs natural stone in proportions that echo the house, with every path, step, and edge detailed to reinforce the formal character of the setting.
Estate gardens require a long-term perspective, and our designs are conceived to mature gracefully over decades. If you are considering a garden project for a period property in Harpenden or the surrounding area, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can help.
