Contemporary Country Garden Cottered Barn
Project Story
Clean geometry and open countryside meet at Cottered Barn. The garden uses architectural paving, crisp terrace detailing and generous outdoor living spaces close to the converted barn, then loosens into swathes of grasses and naturalistic planting that connect the scheme back to its rural Hertfordshire setting.

The challenge, our solution and our approach
The Challenge
This project centred around a unique balance. The barn is rich with character and history, yet the conversion is crisp, contemporary and highly architectural. The garden needed to reflect that modernised feel without losing its rural identity. With expansive countryside views on all sides, the layout also had to feel structured and intentional up close, while still sitting naturally within the wider landscape rather than feeling imposed on its setting.
Our Solution
We created a modern interpretation of a more formal country garden, using clean geometry and a restrained material palette to complement the barn's contemporary lines. Large paving terraces and carefully detailed junctions define a series of outdoor living spaces, while clipped hedging and strong routes give the garden a sense of order and permanence. To soften and unify the space, we used mass planting in confident drifts of single species, paired with sweeping grasses to bring movement and seasonal texture. This approach gives the garden a calm, contemporary rhythm and helps the design dissolve gently into the surrounding countryside.
In Detail
Our Approach
Every project begins with the site itself. For this country garden in Cottered, Hertfordshire, the character of the existing converted barn and its surrounding rural context shaped each design decision. The 3,500 sq ft space presented both constraint and opportunity. The barn is rich with character and history, yet its conversion is crisp, contemporary, and highly architectural, and the garden needed to hold that same tension between heritage and modernity.
Materiality sits at the centre of our approach. In Cottered Barn, herringbone paving and clean stone terraces provide a contemporary framework, while swathes of ornamental grasses and mass planting in confident single-species drifts soften the edges and dissolve the garden into the surrounding countryside. Every surface, edge, and planting composition has been considered as part of a single cohesive language, one that reads as modern and intentional up close yet sits naturally within the wider rural landscape.
Our process is collaborative from the first conversation through to the final planting. We work closely with each client to understand how they want to live in their garden, and we refine every detail until the design feels inevitable. If you are considering a garden project in Cottered or the surrounding area, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can help.
