Country Garden Design Pathways and Pause
Project Story
Movement is slowed deliberately through Pathways and Pause. Curved terraces, self-binding gravel paths and oak pergola walks guide the route through deep planting, creating a country garden of sociable spaces, quiet stopping points and relaxed seasonal abundance.

The challenge, our solution and our approach
The Challenge
To create a garden that felt informal and easy-going, while still being clearly organised and purposeful. The space needed to connect the house terrace to the outbuildings, introduce a sense of movement and discovery, and balance open lawn with richly planted edges, without cluttering the layout or blocking the wider views.
Our Solution
We shaped the garden around a series of flowing routes and calm pauses. A generous, curved stone terrace provides an everyday outdoor room at the house, while a warm gravel path draws you along the boundary beneath simple oak arches, creating a slower, more immersive walk through planting. Curved beds are held with crisp corten steel edging to keep the geometry clean, with a central planted island adding a soft focal moment within the lawn. Planting is layered and seasonal. Hydrangeas, airy perennials and grasses, with shade-loving structure near the archways so the garden feels lush and relaxed, but still deliberately composed.

Our Approach
Some gardens are designed to be explored rather than surveyed. For this 1,200 sq metre country garden in Pirton, oak pergola walkways guide you through richly planted borders, revealing circular pause points where you are invited to stop, sit, and absorb the garden from a new perspective. The design celebrates the journey as much as the destination.
Self-binding gravel pathways edged in corten steel provide the circulatory framework, threading through substantial oak timber pergolas that create rhythm and shade. Three distinct zones emerge along the route: a main entertaining terrace with contemporary furniture, a circular garden room beneath a mature tree, and a productive area near the outbuildings. Cottage-style planting in deep, generous borders provides the softness and seasonal abundance that brings each pause point to life.
We design gardens that reward time spent in them, creating spaces where the experience deepens with every visit. If you are considering a country garden project in Pirton or the surrounding area, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can help.
