Water Garden Design The Bridged Waters

Hertfordshire 2023 9,429 sq ft Country Property

Project Story

The Bridged Waters is a water garden shaped around crossing, reflection and sound. A bridge, pond and pergola lounge form the central journey, while natural stone, moving water, rock edging and aquatic planting soften the route from terrace to destination.

The challenge, our solution and our approach

The Challenge

The brief was to create a garden with real atmosphere and a clear destination, while integrating a substantial pond feature in a way that felt intentional rather than dominant. The space needed to balance safety and usability with the desire for a naturalistic waterscape, and to connect the terrace and seating areas with a strong sense of flow. Materials also had to sit comfortably alongside the existing garden, avoiding anything that felt overly harsh or out of place.

Our Solution

We designed the garden around a naturalistic waterscape, using the pond and cascade as the heart of the scheme. A crisp stone bridge creates a bold architectural moment and forms a direct route from the main terrace to a solid oak pergola lounge, turning the garden into a deliberate journey with a clear end point. Natural stone boulders and a softly detailed waterfall edge bring a more organic character to the water, while layered planting wraps the hard landscaping to soften transitions, enhance biodiversity and deliver year round texture and colour.

In Detail

Our Approach

Water gardens demand a particular sensitivity to material, movement and sound. For this 9,429 sq ft garden in Hertfordshire, the design is organised around a naturalistic pond and cascade, with a bold granite bridge creating both a physical crossing and an architectural centrepiece. The bridge connects the main entertaining terrace to a solid oak pergola lounge, establishing a clear sense of journey and destination that gives the garden purpose and structure.

Natural stone boulders edge the water in an organic, irregular profile, allowing marginal planting, ferns and ground cover to colonise the transition between hard and soft. A cascading waterfall introduces sound and movement, while koi and aquatic planting bring life to the still water beyond. The surrounding borders are planted in generous layers, with Japanese maples, herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses delivering seasonal colour, texture and screening throughout the year.

Designing with water requires careful integration of engineering, ecology and aesthetics. We take time to ensure that every pond, cascade and planted edge feels natural and intentional. If you are considering a water garden project in Hertfordshire, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can help.
